L’appel du vide (2020) by Tayma Ali

 

2020 is an unprecedented, desolate and strenuous year that caught everyone off-guard. We were all asleep at the wheel and resurrected to the crash of the very fabric of our social, economical, and health framework. Yet this year yielded a peculiar feeling of universal oneness; every individual was experiencing the exact dilemma another human was fighting on the other side of the world.

 

The process of creating this experimental artwork is as improvisational and unscripted as this year. This piece is a result of a candid 

conversation that engaged our senses as we listened to music and looked at pictures that brought back memories and events from this year. We shared our pains, struggles and confusion. Meanwhile I captured every expression from every story told. The story is the dominant artistic element in this piece; it rules, determines and transforms the rest of the elements that create this composition.

 

My goal is to mirror every human experience during this time as our story is now one; we are the avant-garde generation that strides against the current. What you see is a matrix of emotions and perseverance is the byproduct.
